Greyboard

Greyboard sheets add rigidity and stiffness to envelopes and mailers, keeping documents, artwork, catalogues, and photographs flat in transit. Placed inside a standard envelope or padded mailer, a single greyboard sheet prevents bending and creasing without needing a rigid outer box — a low-cost addition that makes a meaningful difference to how fragile flat items arrive.

Made from 750-micron recycled board, available in A5, A4, and A3, and supplied in packs of 100 sheets. Recyclable, biodegradable, and plastic free.

What is greyboard used for?

Greyboard sits between paper and cardboard in terms of rigidity — far stiffer than paper, but lighter and thinner than corrugated cardboard. In a packing context, the most common applications are:

Backing boards for envelopes and mailers. Slipped inside a standard envelope or mailing bag, greyboard prevents the contents from flexing under courier handling. Particularly useful for sending prints, photographs, certificates, and artwork where a crease would cause real damage.

Stiffeners for padded mailers. Added to a padded envelope alongside a fragile flat item, greyboard provides the rigidity that bubble lining alone can't — useful for sending things like vinyl records, greeting cards with inserts, or mounted prints.

Artwork backing boards. Used by artists, photographers, and print sellers as a backing board to keep prints and artwork flat during storage and transit.

Greyboard alongside the right envelope

For the most reliable flat-item protection, greyboard works best when combined with a suitable outer. A few natural pairings:

Board backed envelopes already contain a rigid backing, but adding greyboard gives extra stiffness for particularly important or fragile documents. For items that absolutely must not bend, our do not bend envelopes are pre-printed with handling instructions and available in C4, C5, and A4 formats.

Cardboard mailers provide a rigid corrugated outer — adding greyboard inside gives you a double layer of rigidity for higher-value flat items. For lightweight document despatch, our stationery boxes cover A4 and A3 sized papers with a full box format.

Frequently asked questions

What is greyboard made from?

Greyboard is made from multiple layers of recycled paper fibres bonded together under pressure. The layered construction gives it its characteristic stiffness and density — our greyboard sheets are 750 microns thick.

Is greyboard recyclable?

Yes — greyboard is fully recyclable, biodegradable, and plastic free. It can go into standard cardboard recycling. Use our recycling locator to confirm your nearest facility.
