Moving boxes need to work harder than a standard despatch box. They're carrying heavier loads, getting handled more times, and often sitting stacked in a van or storage unit for longer than a typical parcel. Choosing the right moving boxes
Size matters more than you'd think. The most common moving mistake is using boxes that are too large — they're harder to carry, more likely to collapse under their own weight, and encourage overpacking. As a rule, heavier items like books and kitchenware go in smaller boxes; lighter bulkier items like bedding and cushions can go in larger ones.
Single or double wall? For most moving needs, double wall boxes are the better choice — the extra layer of corrugated board gives you significantly more crush resistance when boxes are stacked. For lighter contents where stacking isn't a concern, single wall boxes keep costs down.
Boxes with handles make a real difference over the course of a full move — look for these if you're moving anything at volume or over distance.
How many moving boxes do you need?
A rough guide for a typical house move: a one-bedroom property needs around 15–20 boxes, a two-bedroom around 25–35, and a three-bedroom upwards of 40–50. That said, it varies enormously depending on how much you've accumulated. It's always worth having a few spare — running out mid-pack is easily avoidable.
