5 Benefits to Using Paper Packaging

Sustainability isn't just a trend; it's a business imperative, and packaging choices play a pivotal role. Paper packaging, often overshadowed by plastic, offers a number of benefits that align with environmental goals and practical needs.

Firstly, paper packaging is environmentally friendly, with a biodegradable and recyclable nature that significantly reduces landfill waste. For instance, paper mailing bags present a sustainable alternative with a negative carbon footprint compared to poly mailers.

Secondly, paper packaging is versatile, catering to various industries and product types, from corrugated cardboard boxes for shipping to paper bags for retail packaging, as seen with brands like Lush Cosmetics and Nike.

Contrary to common belief, paper packaging can be cost-effective, with innovations in production technologies leading to sturdy yet lightweight solutions that offer long-term savings on waste disposal fees.

The choice of packaging material influences brand image and consumer perception, with paper packaging resonating positively in an environmentally conscious market. Brands like Patagonia leverage recycled paper bags to reinforce their commitment to sustainability and connect with eco-minded consumers.

Lastly, paper packaging allows for customisation and brand storytelling, offering opportunities to convey brand values and engage customers through printed designs and messages, fostering a personal connection.

How To Make Your Cardboard Packaging More Sustainable

Businesses across sectors are embracing eco-friendly practices, with a focus on sustainable packaging solutions. While cardboard packaging offers versatility and affordability, its environmental impact prompts a closer look. Strategies like using recycled materials and reducing packaging size contribute to sustainability by minimising waste and resource consumption. Additionally, adopting eco-friendly printing techniques and educating consumers about sustainable choices further enhances environmental stewardship.

Choosing sustainable suppliers and fostering a culture of innovation are crucial steps in the journey towards greener packaging. By continually innovating and prioritising sustainability, businesses not only reduce their environmental footprint but also appeal to eco-conscious consumers. With each step towards sustainability, cardboard packaging becomes not just a protective measure for products but also a beacon of environmental responsibility, aligning with consumer values and driving positive change.

Top Tips Ecommerce Businesses Need For Their Cardboard Boxes

Packaging plays a critical role in e-commerce businesses, influencing customer satisfaction, brand perception, and environmental impact. To optimise cardboard box usage, consider several key strategies: right-sizing boxes to minimise wasted space and resource use, investing in high-quality materials for durability, customising packaging for a memorable brand experience, and opting for eco-friendly options to reduce carbon footprint.

Additionally, reinforce packaging for product protection, optimise packing processes for efficiency, factor in dimensional weight pricing for cost-effectiveness, seal boxes securely, and communicate handling instructions clearly. Continuously monitor performance and gather feedback to adapt and improve packaging practices, aligning with evolving customer preferences and industry trends for a more efficient, sustainable, and customer-centric e-commerce ecosystem.

Packaging Heroes

At Loving Earth, regeneration isn't just a buzzword; it's a commitment. Going beyond sustainability, we actively seek ways to regenerate our planet. From sourcing ingredients to packaging, we're dedicated to making a positive impact.

Their packaging is 'Beyond Best Practice,' as highlighted in their Annual Report and Action Plan. Their 30g chocolates are now certified home-compostable, breaking down in your compost bin alongside the bugs. Plus, with printing moving closer to home, they’re reducing packaging miles.

Similarly, the chocolate bars and blocks boast fully home-compostable packaging, made from renewable plant-fibre. And the chocolate boxes? Crafted from post-consumer recycled fibre and printed with vegetable-based inks, they're both eco-friendly and compostable.

Loving Earth are also rethinking their approach to jars. Transitioning to 100% post-consumer recycled plastic jars, they’re addressing issues like breakage and the global sand shortage. While plastic isn't perfect, it's a step towards a circular economy, diverting plastic from landfills and oceans.

And they’re not stopping there. With stacker caps for our jars, they encourage reuse, adding another layer to their sustainability efforts.

Several notable brands have recently joined Canopy's Pack4Good initiative, a move aimed at curbing their impact on ancient and endangered forests by embracing sustainable alternatives like recycled pulp and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified materials. Among these brands are industry giants such as John Lewis & Partners, Kering, C&A, and Zadig & Voltaire. Marija Rompani, sustainability and ethics director at John Lewis Partnership, expressed enthusiasm for their involvement, emphasising the commitment to nature preservation and packaging improvement.

These brands are also engaged in CanopyStyle, an initiative focused on tracing and substituting viscose fibre origins in the fashion industry supply chain, thereby safeguarding forests. Canopy founder Nicole Rycroft highlighted the urgency of such initiatives amidst global climate and biodiversity crises. The involvement of 15 companies, including Next Gen innovators like BlockTexx and Nordic Bioproducts, signals a growing momentum towards sustainable solutions, encompassing circular fibre alternatives and investment in forest conservation efforts. This commitment arrives amidst calls for greater accountability in addressing the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry, as underscored by recent reports.
