Royal Mail Parcel Collect: What You Need to Know About The New Doorstep Collection Service

Royal Mail Parcel Collect: What You Need to Know About The New Doorstep Collection Service
Royal Mail Parcel Collect Guide 2026 | Priory Direct

Last reviewed: March 2026

Royal Mail's Parcel Collect service lets you book a doorstep collection rather than queuing at the post office. A postal worker picks up your parcels at the same time they deliver your post — it costs 72p per item on top of standard postage, but for anyone sending regularly from home or a small business, the time saving more than justifies it.

This guide covers everything you need to know: how to book, size limits, labelling requirements, and how to make sure your parcels are packaged correctly so there are no delays.

1. What is Royal Mail Parcel Collect?

📦

Your postie picks up your parcels at the same time as your daily delivery.

61%

of people say they would prefer to have return parcels collected from home rather than dropping them off themselves, according to Mintel research. For outbound sending the convenience case is equally strong.

2. How Parcel Collect works

The process is straightforward. Your regular postal worker collects your items when they come to deliver your post — no separate van, no separate slot to wait for.

1

Book your collection

Book via Click & Drop or at send.royalmail.com/collect/youritems. You'll need the parcel tracking number or postage item ID from your label. You can book up to 5 days in advance and up until midnight the day before collection.

2

Receive your confirmation

You'll get a confirmation notification and an estimated collection window so you can plan your day. You don't need to be home for the collection — you can nominate a Safeplace.

3

Leave your parcel ready

Make sure your parcel is labelled, sealed, and in an accessible spot. If you have nominated a Safeplace, leave it there. The postal worker will collect it during their normal daily round — typically between 6am and 4pm.

4

Item scanned and tracked

When collected, your item is scanned and a tracking event is created. You'll receive an email notification which acts as proof of postage — no paper receipts needed.

Delivered as normal

Your parcel moves through the Royal Mail network exactly as it would if you'd handed it over at a Post Office. Service speed, tracking, and delivery are unaffected by collection method.

💡

Using Click & Drop? If you're already set up on Click & Drop, booking a Parcel Collect is integrated directly into the platform. You can pay for postage and arrange the collection in the same workflow. Not set up yet? Read our step-by-step Click & Drop guide.

3. Booking a collection

📍

Two ways to book

Both routes require your tracking number or postage item ID from the label.

Via Click & Drop

The easiest route if you're already printing postage through Click & Drop. Book and pay for postage and the collection in one workflow. Collection is automatically linked to the label you've printed.

Via the Royal Mail website

Go to send.royalmail.com/collect/youritems. Enter your tracking number or postage item ID, confirm your collection address, choose a date, and you're done. Confirmation is sent by email.

Book at Royal Mail →
Booking deadlines: You must book by midnight the night before your chosen collection date. Collections happen during normal delivery rounds — typically 6am–4pm — so your parcel needs to be ready first thing. You can book up to 5 days ahead.

4. Packaging your parcel correctly

Royal Mail's packaging requirements apply regardless of whether you're dropping off at a Post Office or using Parcel Collect. Getting packaging right matters — an incorrectly packed item can be refused at collection or delayed in the network.

📦

Use the right box for the size band

Parcel Collect covers items up to 610 x 460 x 460mm and 20kg — the Medium Parcel band. But using the smallest appropriate box for your item is always better: it saves postage costs and reduces the chance of damage. See our Royal Mail size guide to find the right band, then use our search by size tool to find the right box.

🔒

Seal it properly

All flaps must be closed and securely taped — top, bottom, and any seams. Parcels left for Parcel Collect may sit in a Safeplace before collection, so they need to be properly sealed and weatherproof. Peel-and-seal postal boxes make this faster and more secure than taping standard boxes.

🆗

Protect the contents

Packaging must be of suitable strength for the size and weight of the goods. Use cushioning void fill to prevent movement — a product that shifts inside the box during transit is far more likely to be damaged. For fragile items, double wall boxes and wrap-around foam or paper padding are recommended.

🚫

No document wallets, string, or strapping

Royal Mail's sorting machines can't handle items secured with string or strapping, or items wrapped only in document wallets. Everything must be in a sealed cardboard box, mailing bag, or padded envelope. See our padded envelope size guide if you're sending smaller or flatter items.

Recommended packaging for Parcel Collect

Anything from a Large Letter box up to a medium double wall box works well. Peel-and-seal closures are ideal when leaving parcels for collection unattended.

5. Labels: what you need before booking

You need a valid barcoded label on your parcel before you can book a Parcel Collect — the tracking number on that label is what you enter when booking. This means you need to sort your label before anything else.

Royal Mail now charges for labels — from January 2026

Royal Mail began charging approximately £4.69 per roll for labels that were previously free. If you're sending at any volume, sourcing your own thermal label stock is now significantly cheaper. Read our guide to the changes.

Shop thermal labels →

Label size

The UK standard is 6″ x 4″ (152 x 101mm) — the format produced by Click & Drop and compatible with all direct thermal printers. This is what Royal Mail's sorting systems expect.

Label placement

Apply to the largest flat face, clear of seams, tape, and edges. The barcode must be scannable on collection — a label that peels off or is placed over a fold can cause a missed scan and delay.

Label quality

Use labels with a strong permanent adhesive and BPA-free thermal coating. If your parcel is left outside in a Safeplace, the label needs to survive exposure to moisture. Low-quality labels can fade or peel in transit.

💡

Don't tape over your label. Royal Mail's guidance is explicit: do not place sticky tape over any part of the label. It affects print quality and can prevent scanning, meaning your item may be returned or delayed. Read more in our thermal label guide.

6. Size and weight limits for Parcel Collect

Parcel Collect accepts items up to the Medium Parcel band. Anything larger than this cannot be collected and would need to be arranged via Parcelforce instead. The limits below are for the packed item — box, contents, void fill, and tape all included.

Parcel Collect size limits — all measurements are maximums of the packed item

Maximum length610mm
Maximum width460mm
Maximum depth460mm
Maximum weight20kg
🛈

These limits match the Medium Parcel band in Royal Mail's pricing structure. For a full breakdown of all five size bands — Letter, Large Letter, Small Parcel, Medium Parcel, and Large Parcel — with postage cost implications and recommended packaging for each, see our Royal Mail size guide.

Sending tubes or cylindrical items? For tubular, triangular, or long rectangular packages the length plus twice the diameter must not exceed 104cm, with the greatest dimension no more than 90cm. Our postal tubes are sized to stay within these limits.

7. Using Parcel Collect for customer returns

Parcel Collect isn't just for outbound sending — it was originally designed as a returns solution, and it remains one of the most convenient ways for customers to return unwanted items without visiting a post office or drop-off point.

81%

of consumers say a good returns experience makes them more likely to shop with a retailer again. Making returns easy — and free — is one of the most effective levers for repeat sales.

📋

Include a returns label in every parcel

The easiest way to enable Parcel Collect returns is to include a unique barcoded returns label in every parcel you send. The customer simply books a collection at send.royalmail.com/collect/youritems using the tracking number on their label — no printer required on their end if you use Royal Mail's QR code returns option.

📱

No printer needed for the customer

If you use Royal Mail's Tracked Returns portal with your branded returns page, customers can book a Parcel Collect and Royal Mail will bring the label to them on collection — nothing to print. This is the highest-friction-removal option and worth setting up if you have volume returns.

🔍

End-to-end tracking on returns

Each collected item is scanned at collection and tracked all the way back to you. This speeds up the relisting and reselling process — you know exactly when stock is on its way back rather than waiting for it to show up unexpectedly.

💡

Returning small or flat items? If your customers are returning clothing, accessories, or other flat items, a padded envelope or board-backed mailer is often the most appropriate packaging. See our padded envelope size guide to choose the right format — many items that qualify as Large Letter size are significantly cheaper to return than Small Parcel.

8. Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most often about Parcel Collect — answered directly.

Do I need to be home for the collection?+

No. You can nominate a Safeplace — a secure area at your property where the postal worker can collect the parcel without you being present. When you book, you can specify this location. Note that once collected from a Safeplace, responsibility for the parcel passes to Royal Mail at that point. Make sure the location is accessible but not exposed to bad weather.

What time will the postie collect?+

Collections happen during normal delivery rounds, typically anywhere between 6am and 4pm. You'll receive a confirmation with an estimated collection window to help you plan, but the exact time depends on your local delivery route. This is why having a Safeplace nominated is useful — you don't need to be home watching for them.

How much does Parcel Collect cost?+

72p per parcel, on top of normal postage. If you're collecting the maximum of 5 items per day, that's £3.60 in collection fees per day on top of your postage costs. When you factor in saved time, travel, parking, and queuing at a post office, this is often very good value for businesses sending regularly.

Can I send more than 5 items?+

The Parcel Collect limit is 5 items per collection per day. If you're consistently sending more than this, you'd be better suited to a Royal Mail business collection account where a driver comes to your premises — this is available free of charge with Royal Mail Tracked services for qualifying volumes. Contact your Royal Mail account manager to discuss options.

Does my parcel get proof of postage?+

Yes. When the postal worker scans your parcel at collection, a tracking event is created. You'll receive an email notification which acts as proof of postage. This replaces the paper receipts you'd get at a post office. You can also track the item's progress from that point in the normal way.

What services can I use with Parcel Collect?+

Parcel Collect works with Royal Mail Tracked 24 and 48, Royal Mail Tracked Returns 24 and 48, and Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed services. It is not available for standard untracked services. You'll need a barcoded label from one of these services to book a collection.

What size items can be collected?+

Up to 610 x 460 x 460mm and 20kg — the Medium Parcel band. Items larger or heavier than this cannot be collected via Parcel Collect and would need to go via Parcelforce or a business collection arrangement. For anything smaller, getting your item into the cheapest applicable size band saves money on postage. Use our Royal Mail size guide to check.

Can I cancel a booking?+

Yes — you can cancel a Parcel Collect booking up until midnight the day before collection. Log back into send.royalmail.com/collect/youritems or manage it through Click & Drop. If you miss the cancellation window and the postie attempts collection but finds no parcel, no charge is applied for the missed collection itself — but the postage cost already paid is non-refundable.

Is Parcel Collect available every day?+

Monday to Saturday, excluding Sundays and bank holidays. There is no Parcel Collect on Sundays — if you need Sunday despatch, your only option is to drop off at a Post Office or Royal Mail Customer Service Point where Sunday hours are available, for eligible services.
